The Books In Our Home

I knew I wanted to make books a focal point in our living room. Our bookshelves were one of the first things to go up and instantly made the place feel more homey and our own.

These were some of my sources of inspiration (click on thumbnails for links):

And here’s our execution of the idea:

I like that there’s still room to grow – in book collection and TV size.

The shelves are from Ikea and the mounting is from Home Depot. Russell carefully measured out the spacing of everything, which was a lot harder than it looks (I knew what I wanted but wasn’t sure how to put it into words or numbers). Thankfully my brother was in town to help. I sat on the couch and drove them crazy by requesting adjustments along the way.

The color coordinating is all Russell’s doing. The only thing I requested was that the cookbooks be set aside on a separate shelf because those easily get lost when you really need them. Otherwise I’ve gotten to the know the rest of our books pretty well by color and can find what I’m looking for. (The Justin Bieber book is always one of the first books that people notice. I’m considering taking it off, but it’s such a hallmark title from my time at Harper that I’m reluctant to get rid of it. It is pretty silly though.)

I love seeing people’s bookshelves, especially when so much though has been put into them. Mine are organized by genre (I can’t help it, that’s how my brain works).

    • Genre is most likely how I would’ve done it too. But it’s interesting seeing guide books next to literature like Infinite Jest, and kids books next to poetry books. Either way, I’m constantly admiring and smiling at my book collection.

  2. Such good taste in books {which I already knew!} and games! Love the idea of the baskets on the bottom. You’ve inspired me to rearrange the shelves around my woodstove ;). Thanks for that project! I think yours really came out a lot like the feel of that picture on the top right. High five!
