Isla Vista On My Mind

I’ve been debating whether or not I should put in my two cents about the recent tragedy in Isla Vista. Ultimately, posting anything else this week seemed trivial.

As a UCSB alum, I feel sad for all the students whose college experience will now forever be tainted by this heinous crime. As a woman, I feel disgusted by Elliot Rodger’s misogynistic thoughts and actions. As a sorority member, I feel enraged for being part of his target. But it’s really not at all about me. I’m trying to focus on my compassion towards all the victims, their friends and family, and the entire Isla Vista community. Let’s go Gauchos, be strong.

  1. Let’s go Gauchos. One of the things that makes me so angry, is that my 4 years living in Isla Vista were the safest I’ve ever felt, and that that was taken away from all, not just women, that live there now, incenses me. That so many happy memories, and present and future discussion will be tainted by this one heinous act really saddens me.

Apart from the obvious debate around gun control measures, I think we need to take a good hard look at mental illness and our country’s lack of response to this issue.

  2. OK I’m living in a hole because I have no idea what you’re talking about… but I’m going to look for it right now! 😦 Sorry to hear though… As if life needed more tragedies.
