The weekend before my 30th birthday, I celebrated with family in Central California. My parents recently moved from Southern California to Madera, which is just outside of Fresno. Most people respond to this information with “oh my god, why??”
I answer with 1) to be in between my sister in LA and me in the Bay Area, 2) my dad wanted lots o’ land, and 3) to be closer to nature like Yosemite National Park.
I have to say Fresno and Madera have really grown on me.
My sister and her boyfriend came up for the weekend. And it was really a birthday party for 3 of us: Peter, Erynn, and Russell, as demonstrated on the cake.
We went hiking in Yosemite at the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias, which is just an hour away from my parents’ home.
And we saw a bear!
Yosemite is seriously a sight to behold. Absolutely stunning.
The next day we went wine tasting. There’s an entire Madera Wine Trail that begins just a few miles from my parents’ home. We didn’t have much time, so we just stopped by the first winery, Birdstone Winery, where the owner walked us through a comprehensive 8-glass tasting.
One of my primary reasons for moving back to California was to be closer to family. I am so grateful for the time I get to spend with them. Best birthday a daughter/sister could ask for.
